Jamaican Dr. Bird

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Process

All Jamaican Coffee has for many years been hand-reaped to ensure the proper ripening of the berries when they are removed from the trees. After reaping the berries are sent to pulperies where they are pulped and then washed to remove muscilage. The resulting "wet parchment" is dried, cured, hulled, graded and then sorted. Jamaica is one of only a handful of countries where the "parchment" is allowed to sit and age for a minimum of six weeks to ensure its proper consistency.
Before the coffee is exported, rigorous cup testing and other quality control measures are done to ensure the appearance and cup-quality of the beans to meet the Coffee Industry Board's standards.

The Types of Jamaican Coffee

The production of Jamaican Coffee, though infinitesimal (approximately 6 million lb.) as against world output, has, as its primary focus, the production of a top quality coffee bean.

There are two main categories of coffee as designated by the CIB:

  1. Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee (100% GENUINE JAMAICA BLUE MOUNTAIN COFFEE)

  2. Jamaica Prime

JAMAICA BLUE MOUNTAIN
This type of coffee is perhaps the most famous coffee anywhere in the world. For coffee to be designated as Jamaica Blue Mountain, it must be grown in the prescribed area within the parishes of St. Thomas, St. Andrew and Portland in the eastern part of the island. Jamaica Blue Mountain is grown primarily at altitudes between 2,000 - 5,OOOft. above sea level though a few farms do produce above this height. These conditions have to be met in order to be certified by the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board as authentic

JAMAICA PRIME
This type of Jamaican Coffee is normally grown in the parishes of St. Catherine, Clarendon, Manchester, St. Ann and St. Elizabeth. Most of the cultivation of Prime Coffee could, in fact, be regarded as high grown" being cultivated at altitudes way above sea level but outside of the Blue Mountain range. Jamaica Prime is now internationally regarded as a premium quality gourmet bean in its own right.
